Africa should not just use AI.

Africa should help build it.

NIA AI Fellows explores how talented students and graduates can participate in the global AI economy.

As AI systems grow, international companies increasingly need thoughtful people to evaluate outputs, improve quality, test systems, apply domain expertise, and contribute to the development of better AI.

We are starting by building a founding waitlist of serious, capable students and graduates in Kenya and across Africa.

What fellows may work on

Future work may include high-judgment AI workflows where domain knowledge, careful reasoning, and strong writing directly improve model quality.

Evaluation

AI Evaluation

Review AI answers for accuracy, clarity, reasoning, and usefulness.

Testing

Prompt Engineering

Write and test prompts that reveal strengths, weaknesses, and edge cases.

Research

Research Support

Review, structure, and validate information used in AI workflows.

Expert review

Domain Expertise

Apply knowledge from law, medicine, business, engineering, science, languages, and more.

Quality

AI Safety

Identify incorrect, biased, unsafe, or low-quality AI outputs before they reach users.

Context

Language & Culture Evaluation

Help AI systems better understand African context, culture, language, and communication.

Your degree does not limit you.

You do not need to be a programmer or AI expert. We are looking for strong academic backgrounds, critical thinking, clear communication, curiosity, and attention to detail.

06

Shape the program

Your early feedback may influence what NIA becomes and who it serves best.

The first people to raise their hands may help define what this becomes.

This is exciting, but it won't be easy.

What to expect +

NIA AI Fellows is currently an exploratory initiative. Joining the waitlist does not guarantee paid work, acceptance, earnings, or immediate project access.

If future opportunities open, selected fellows may need to complete assessments, training, and quality reviews. We are building a high-trust community, not a mass signup platform.

  • Assessments may be required.
  • Training and onboarding may be selective.
  • Quality standards will matter.
  • Project access may depend on client demand and performance.

FAQs

What does NIA mean?+

NIA means purpose. For this initiative, that purpose is to connect talented students and graduates in Kenya and across Africa with future opportunities in the global AI economy.

Is this a job?+

Not yet. NIA AI Fellows is currently exploratory. We are collecting interest before selecting people for future training, pilots, or paid opportunities.

Do I need AI experience?+

No. We are looking for curious, capable people who think clearly, communicate well, and learn quickly.

How much could fellows earn?+

Future opportunities may range from $10 to $50+ per hour depending on expertise, project complexity, client requirements, and quality of work. Earnings are not guaranteed.

Which universities are eligible?+

We are initially focusing on selected universities in Kenya and may expand over time. Applicants should enter their university in the form.

Can non-technical students apply?+

Yes. AI needs expertise from many domains, including law, medicine, business, languages, research, engineering, mathematics, and more.

Will this connect to international companies?+

That is the goal. We are exploring how to connect qualified Kenyan and African talent with international companies that need support for AI evaluation, research, prompt testing, and domain-specific workflows.

What happens after I apply?+

You will be on the founding waitlist. Selected applicants may be contacted later if screening, training, or pilot opportunities open.

Is this remote?+

Many AI evaluation workflows can be remote, but future access will depend on partner requirements, project scope, and operational setup.

Are earnings guaranteed?+

No. Joining the waitlist does not guarantee paid work, acceptance, earnings, or immediate project access.
